Footloose opens two weeks from Friday, and Director Benjamin McGovern is having the time of his life: “Rehearsals are exhilarating because of all the energy these young performers bring to the room,” he says.
But the show also has a deeper message — one of hope and healing after trauma. “One of the things we’re talking a lot about is how a whole town can exhibit trauma and how trauma can live in the body, and how dance and the physical expression of dane can release that in a way that’s tremendous and joyous.” Says McGovern, who has teamed up with Music Director Anita Ruth and Choreographer Heidi Spesard-Noble for Footloose. “This play is, in some ways, a journey from something unanswered in the body that gets answered through dance. But how that also translates to the emotional health of an entire town.”
