Abstract Not Abstract
Exhibiting Artist: Tom Westberg
September 29 - November 10, 2016
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 29, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
In Abstract Not Abstract artist Tom Westberg uses newspaper as his primary medium, exploring its built-in qualities of both negative and positive space. "The paper, medium, and process become the art, but only if I can intuitively recognize and understand these principles does it come to be a work of art." For Westberg, painting in an Abstract Expressionist style helps him create an alliance between structural concern, tone, line, and spatial illusion. "Even the most abstract of shapes has a rudimentary connection to the real world. Just as likely, real objects have a relation to the abstract. This is the ambiguity that keeps me as well as the spectator on an uneven plane." - Tom Westberg
