ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

In Places of Refuge: An Artists Year in Batik, Kim Gordon uses outdoor experiences as a source for later studio work. It allows her to spend quiet time in a place while the light changes in the sky, birds call and fly over, and the wind itself creates sounds in the grasses and leaves and carries the smells of the earth. She is constantly fascinated by the effect of light on form, defining and eroding it. This immersive experience of plein air instills a strong memory of the living landscape. It seeds the creative work that flows from it.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kim Gordon lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and works as an artist, designer/illustrator and teacher. A life-long artist, primarily as a painter, she paints plein air and in the studio. Gordon first discovered watercolor batik in 2017 while on an artist residency and for the past several years has worked intensely with this new twist on an ancient art form. Gordon has a long-term passion for the environment and has volunteered with the St. Paul Audubon Society, the Northstar Chapter of the Sierra Club, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency She is a member of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota and The Batik Guild.
