Winging It!

April 7 - June 11, 2023 📍Confluence Gallery

ARTIST: Susan Feigenbaum

OPENING RECEPTION: Sunday, April 16th, 2023 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm

The reception is free and open to the public.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

In Winging it!, Susan Feigenbaum’s work is inspired by her experiences, observations, and sketches.

She interpreted birds from five habitats—deciduous woodlands, boreal forests, lakes and rivers, wetlands, and grasslands. To research this work, she studied rare book illustrations at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Andersen Horticultural Library, and documented bird behavior and habitats on field trips.

These compositions are inspired by her lifelong appreciation for birds. Growing up in Chicago, her interest was sparked as she watched the backyard birds that her mother loved to feed. After moving to Minnesota, her birding universe exploded as she discovered countless new birds through field trip experiences and ornithology classes.

By combining her art with my appreciation for birds and nature, she hopes that viewers will experience a fresh look at our Minnesota birds and where they live.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Susan Feigenbaum is a ceramic artist and educator in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Her sculpture is shown in exhibitions, galleries, and year-round at the Northrup King Building in the NE Minneapolis Arts District and has received numerous awards in local and international juried exhibitions. Her sculpture is also currently featured in BirdScapes, a public art installation at the Eden Prairie Outdoor Center.

As a four-time recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Learning Grant, Susan brought clay learning adventures to residents in senior communities. She was awarded a 2017 Jerome Project Grant for Ceramic Artists and a 2019 Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Susan is a graduate of Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education (MN NICE), an advanced certificate program that provides personalized professional development in ceramics.

While growing up in Chicago, Susan began her lifelong interest in art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois and majored in graphic design. After moving to the Twin Cities, she headed her own business. Initially, clay was an escape from the computerized world of graphic design. The study and creation of ceramic sculpture is now a full time pursuit.

WINGING IT! is available for viewing at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Confluence Gallery Thursday-Sunday 10:00 am-4:00 pm.
